Obama: US Stands Ready to Assist Haiti

In the wake of a massive earthquake which rocked the island of Haiti earlier this afternoon, President Obama said in a statement said that his thoughts and prayers were with the people of Haiti.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti,” Obama said in a statement.

Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who is currently in Honolulu said that, the US would provide full assistance to Haiti, including civilian and military relief, along with humanitarian assistance.

It has been reported that a disaster response plan is being put together by the US State Department and a Task Force is working around the clock on emergency relief assistance.

On Tuesday afternoon, around 5:15 pm, a quake of magnitude 7.0 struck some 10 miles from the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Reports are that the devastation is wide-spread, buildings have collapsed and there have been casualties.     Reports have said too that, there was also damage to the Presidential Palace.
