Sisters in the Movement Event for Women’s History Month

Sisters in Movement 1Sisters in the Movement, the second event in the leadership series “Race to Justice” sponsored by the National Action Network and Women of Color, plans to celebrate Women’s History Month by looking back and moving forward. Under a motto of “our history is our strength,” the March 24th event will be focused on women in the civil rights movement, both past and present, while also discussing where the women’s movement is headed in the future.

“As a person who grew up with family members in the movement, I truly understand how important it is to remember that African-American women have been a critical part of the civil rights movement since the beginning,” said Central Florida National Action Network President Lawanna Gelzer. “This is an open dialogue. This event is not just to remember where we came from, but to reflect on where we are going to take this movement into the future, with everybody’s experiences included.”

Participating organizations supporting the leadership series events include Fight Back Coalition, Dream Defenders, Black Lives Matter, Community Empowerment Partnership. The organizations are also part of the Racial & Social Justice Alliance along with NAN and Women of Color. Attorney Natalie Jackson will be a presenter representing Black Lives Matter movement. The first even part of the leadership series focused on “Social Justice in Action” and was held at the Greater Refuge Memorial Church in January.

Sisters in the Movement will be held at the Hiawassee Branch Library (7210 W Colonial Drive) on March 24th at 6pm.
