Orlando Science Center: Orlando’s Largest Wine Events, May 9

Whet your palate and your mind at one of Orlando’s largest wine events on Saturday, May 9 at Orlando Science Center. The Science of Wine is not just another wine tasting, but an oenological odyssey with presentations on multiple aspects of wine growing and wine tasting as well as the opportunity to sample more than 100 fine wines from the world’s most important wine regions.

This event is a fundraiser for Orlando Science Center and presented by Akerman for the fifth consecutive year; Southern Wine & Spirits also returns as the exclusive wine provider. Thom Horsey of Ste Michelle Wine Estates as well as Tim’s Wine Market are education partners, providing presentations and workshops on the science of wine.

In excess of 100 fine wines will be featured from the world-class portfolio of Southern Wines & Spirits, and every major wine region will be represented. Whether you are a novice or a wine aficionado, you will find a vast variety of wines to please your senses.

From 7 p.m. – 10 p.m., there will be plentiful gourmet and casual food offerings to accompany the wide range of wine selections. Food partners include Hawkers Asian Street Fare, Taverna Opa, Tapa Toro Tapas Bar & Paella Pit, Maxine’s on Shine, Crafted Block & Brew, Sonny’s BBQ, Hard Rock Cafe, Dragonfly Robata Grill & Sushi, John Michael Exquisite Weddings and Catering, Millenia Catering, Puff ‘n Stuff, John & Shirley’s Catering, Vital Flair, Java Lava, Arthur’s Catering, Whole Foods Market, World of Chocolate Museum and Café, Mattie’s Delectable Desserts, Central Florida Coffee and ONLI Beverages.

In addition, a limited number of seats are available for a seminar on cutting-edge wine-making techniques used in Washington state, which ranks second in the United States behind California in the production of wine. Attendees will have the opportunity to taste wines produced in that area and take a virtual tour to both the region and inside the wineries to discover how these great wines are made.

Hosting the journey is Thom Horsey, national wine educator for Ste Michelle Wine Estates and Washington’s founding winery. Horsey is a 35-year veteran of the wine industry and has conducted more than 1,200 trainings, seminars, dinners and tastings on almost every aspect of wine.

And several new additions are guaranteed to complement the proceedings. Aerialists Annike Karlsen and Lindsey Nova will dance in the air above guests’ heads, and attendees can enjoy cigar rolling by The King of Cigars. Live music will be provided by pianist Lynn Peghiny on a piano provided by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. There will also be contests to win your favorite wine and the opportunity to create small canvas paintings facilitated by Super Awesome Cool Pottery. Guests will indulge their curiosity as well as their palates with presentations by Tim’s Wine Market and an exploration of “Weather and Wine” featuring WFTV Meteorologist George Waldenberger.

Tickets are available for $85 per person. Special rate tickets for Science Center members are $70. Sponsorships are available from $2,000. All sponsorships include event tickets and exclusive admission to the VIP Champagne Pre-Event Reception. Tickets and additional details are available online atwww.osc.org/wine.
