Republican Bob McDonnell claimed victory this evening in the race for Governor of Virginia over Democratic contender, Creigh Deeds, while incumbent Democratic Governor Jon Corzine lost his battle to Republican challenger Chris Christie.
Some see these wins as spelling trouble for the Obama Administration in the mid-term elections in 2010. This is so given that, Virginia was an important swing state which Obama carried in the national elections one year ago, while New Jersey is traditionally a democratic strong hold.
Voters in both Virginia and New Jersey said the economy, including rising unemployment and lack of jobs was their major concern.
Furthermore, a majority of voters also said too that, President Obama was not a factor in their vote today. In Virginia that figure was 55 percent and in New Jersey, 60 percent.
