On Saturday, residents of the District 6 community turned out to Chat ‘N’ Chew with Derrick Wallace who is vying to become the next Orange County Commissioner for the area.
With scores of volunteers in attendance – some providing voter registration information, others passing out literature and signing up new volunteers – the celebratory event officially kicked off the election season, as qualifying to get on the ballot ended on Friday.
“Although I qualified for this race several months ago, I wanted to celebrate our hardworking volunteers and the rest of the community, as we head toward the August 26 election in just over sixty days,” said Wallace, one of six candidates in the District 6 race.
He added: “The occasion also provided an opportunity for me to hear and answer the community’s questions, which ranged from economic development, to jobs, and safety and security, particularly for seniors.”
Wallace has anchored his campaign on: creating jobs and fostering economic development; enhancing educational opportunities; improving safety and security; championing affordable housing and supporting improvements in transportation infrastructure.
With lots of free food, fun and fellowship and unlike Wallace’s campaign fundraisers that feature tasty ‘Fish and Chips’ and ‘Fish and Grits,’ today’s fare consisted of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, which was a sure-fire hit with all in attendance.
Dubbed “A Race For Change,” today’s Chat ‘N’ Chew, held at Wallace’s campaign headquarters located at 2000 Bruton Boulevard, also featured a DJ and face artist, Tonya Williams, to the delight, not only of the kids, but to several adults as well.
