As a part of the Orlando Magic’s “25 Events in 25 Days” community campaign celebrating the Magic’s 25th anniversary, the team, in partnership with Florida Blue, will unveil one of the 25 reading corners being built throughout Central Florida on Thursday, October 10 at 3 p.m. at the Orange County Orlando Magic Recreation Center at Goldenrod Park (4863 N. Goldenrod Rd., Winter Park, 32792). Taking part in the unveiling celebration includes Magic player Glen Davis, Magic CEO Alex Martins, Magic Community Ambassadors Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw, Florida Blue Market President, Central Florida Region Tony Jenkins. The Orlando Magic and Florida Blue will donate children’s furniture, a bookcase and Orlando Magic décor to each of the 25 locations. All of the books will be donated by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company.
The 25 reading corner locations will all be built between 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. by Magic employees as part of the Magic Volunteer Program (MVP) and Florida Blue volunteers and include Highland Christian Academy, Juliette Cooks, Daydreams Child Development Center, Good Homes Preschool of Ocoee, Good Homes Preschool of Orlando, Callahan Neighborhood Center, Discover Academy, Merriday Montessori School, Children’s Academy at Loch Haven, Wadeview Community Center, Heritage Prep School, Pine Hills Preschool and Childcare Center, Young Achievers, Storybook School, Best Memories, Dover Shores Community Center, Ladybird Academy of Wyndham Lakes, Kinderklub Academy, Bright Horizons of Winter Garden, Barnett Park & Gym (Orange County Orlando Magic Rec Center), Goldenrod Park (Orange County Orlando Magic Rec Center), Meadow Woods Park (Orange County Orlando Magic Rec Center), Silver Star Community Park (Orange County Orlando Magic Rec Center), South Econ Community Park (Orange County Orlando Magic Rec Center), West Orange Recreation Center (Orange County Orlando Magic Rec Center).
In the Magic and Florida Blue’s continuing efforts to develop lifelong learners through literacy and education, the 25 reading corners build is an extension of the Orlando Magic’s Baskets for Books program presented by Florida Blue. As part of the Baskets for Books program, during every Magic home game each point scored by the Magic will result in one book being donated to the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County. More than 1,500 books have been donated to ELC through Baskets for Books. The program provides a way to continue the team’s literacy efforts, one of the Magic’s three community focus areas.
