Orange County Offers Free Breastfeeding Classes

There are many choices an expectant mother needs to make before her baby is born, including the best method to feed her baby.  The Orange County Health Department’s Women, Infants and Children program, commonly known as WIC, provides education about the benefits and the basics of breastfeeding to help mothers make an informed decision.

The WIC program invites pregnant women and their loved ones to their free Prenatal Breastfeeding Basics Classes.  These classes are offered in 6 WIC offices throughout Orange County monthly.

Breastfeeding classes are available in English, Spanish and Creole. Breastfeeding has many benefits including: building a special bond with her baby, providing a uniquely perfect source of nutrition, cost savings, and health benefits for the mother and the baby.  Breast milk protects her baby from illnesses including ear and upper respiratory infections.

Research has shown that babies that are exclusively breastfed for 6 months are less likely to become obese and develop type 2 diabetes.  Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of some health problems, including breast and ovarian cancer.

Basic Breastfeeding classes during the month of May are at the following WIC offices:
