Governor Ron DeSantis proposed $1,000 property tax rebates for Florida homeowners, saying property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government.
The Republican Governor announced a proposal to deliver immediate property tax relief to Florida homeowners: a rebate averaging $1,000 for each homesteaded property in the state. The rebates, to be issued in December 2025, would cover state-mandated school property taxes—ensuring full school district funding while easing the burden on families.
Governor DeSantis said this proposal would benefit over 5.1 million homesteaded properties across Florida and marks a major step toward the Governor’s long-term goal of eliminating property taxes through a future constitutional amendment.
“Property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government,” said Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. “Constitutional protections for Florida homeowners require approval of the voters in 2026. In the meantime, Floridians need relief. I am today proposing a plan that will result in—on average—$1,000 rebate checks for each homestead as a discount on their property taxes. If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year. Let’s get this done for the people of Florida this session.”
The Governor called on the legislature to grant the necessary authority to issue the Florida property tax rebates immediately, leveraging the state’s strong revenue position to benefit full-time residents.
Thank you Governor DeSantis but it definitely should be more money as your debacle property insurance legislation failed all Floridians.

I was planning on selling and moving because taxes and insurance was causing me to go through my retirement accounts so quickly after my husband passed
I am also thinking about selling my home because taxes and insurance rates continue to rise. I am 65 years old and I work full time. I’m not sure I can continue to live in Florida because my mortgage has risen to over 14oo.00 per month.
Finally a Governor who, even if it is for alterear motives is showing that he kinda cares about the state and it’s people whom elected him. I have said the same thing ever since I bought my home, outright, no mortgage, but still have to pay property taxes annually for the time I own the home and land it’s built on…. So in essence I never really own the land with or without land deed…. I only ever lease it and pay for home built on that land. Oh well, it is a necessary cost/debt( if mortgaged) like a car, since without it…. Your gonna be walking or sleeping on street.

How about retroactive? I paid property taxes in Florida for 50 years. I’ve been in an apartment for 10 years paying outrageous rent! I’m 71 years old and could use that money for food and medicine.
