George Zimmerman and witnesses told police that Trayvon Martin punched him, jumped on top of him and slammed his head into the sidewalk, the Orlando Sentinel reported Monday.
The account would give credence to Zimmerman’s self defense claim in the case, which has erupted into international news and focused a spotlight on the Seminole County community of Sanford.
Police reports that weren’t made public until recently say Zimmerman told police that he had turned around and was going back to his SUV when the 17-year-old Martin approached him from behind, and after the two exchanged words Martin attacked him, knocking him to the ground and beating him.
When police arrived after Zimmerman shot Martin at close range, the Seminole reported, less than two minutes later, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, had a swollen lip and had bloody lacerations to the back of his head.
Zimmerman’s attorney, Craig Sonner, told ABC News this weekend that Zimmerman suffered a broken nose, and that he would argue self defense. Sonner also said Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law would likely be applicable in the case.
