UCF Student Driving Wrong Way Killed in Head-On Crash

A UCF student, who should have been celebrating her 21st birthday on Sunday, was killed in a head on crash while driving in the wrong direction on Vineland Road, east of Major Boulevard in Orlando.

Orlando Police said that for an unknown, a 2001 Volkswagon convertible, driven by Chelsea B. Torres, of Tansy Drive, Orlando, was heading eastbound on the westbound side of Vineland Road, in the inside lane, approaching the turnpike around 3:15 am on Sunday.

A 2004 Honda, driven by Elvis Felix, 23 years, was going westbound on Vineland Road in the inside lane crossing over the Turnpike overpass.  Both vehicles hit head on causing major damage to both cars; Orlando Fire Department Engine # 10, Tower 10 and Rescue #10 responded.

Torres, who turned 21 years on Sunday, December 19th, was pronounced dead on the scene. She was not wearing a seat-belt and it is not known whether alcohol played a role in the crash.  Torres was a student at the University of Central Florida.

Felix, who was wearing a seat-belt, complained of neck and back pain, following the crash.  He was transported by Rural Metro to Orlando Regional Medical Center, with possible injuries.

This crash brings the number of traffic homicides in Orlando to 23.
