Gov. Rick Scott has indicated to Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs that he is in no rush to pick a “permanent” replacement for the County Commission District 3 seat.
Jacobs, who held a closed door meeting with Scott during his visit to Orlando earlier this week, wanted to know more about the process the governor is employing to make the appointment.
“I asked the Governor to appoint someone who is above reproach and committed to public service,” Jacobs told Scott. “I also urged him to select someone who commits not to run for the seat in 2012. I believe that will give the citizens in District 3 the best opportunity to participate in a fair and open election.”
Yes, residents of District 3, have a representative in Commissioner Lui Damiani, appointed by then-Gov. Charlie Crist, after duly elected Commissioner Mildred Fernandez was suspended and arrested on corruption charges. But, Scott could appoint a new commissioner prior to the 2012 elections, now that Fernandez has pleaded guilty and has resigned from her seat.
It’s left to be seen what Scott will do, in view of the limited time between now and elections next year. As Scott says, he is in no rush to pick a “permanent” replacement, but that hasn’t stopped the Hispanic lobbying efforts.
Damiani, who represents a large Hispanic district but who himself is not, is reported to be doing a great job serving his constitutents and is expected to be on the ballot next year.
