Two Suspects Ided in Cops “Take-Down” of Crime Ring

UPDATE: The OPD officers involved in the shooting incident are: Officer timothy Kuzma, a 9-year veteran of the police force and Officer Randall Pennington, who was hired in December 2004.    They have both been placed on leave.

Orlando police have positively identified two of the three suspects involved in the felony organized crime ring, who police opened fire on during a felony take-down in a Target parking lot on East Colonial Drive on Sunday afternoon.

The two suspects arrested are: Edward Torres, 30 years and Juan A. Nieves-Perez, 65 years.   A third suspect who remains in critical condition has not yet been identified.

According to OPD, police were investigating a felony organized crime ring when about 3:38 pm, on Sunday, November 21, OPD TAC Unit was involved in a felony take-down of a white van in the Target parking lot, in the 3200 block on east Colonial Drive.  Investigators said that during the felony take down shots were fired by Orlando police officers.

Torres and Nieves were passengers in the van.  The third suspect, the driver of the van was taken to a local area hospital for treatment and is in critical condition.

Investigators have determined that the van was stolen out of Pennsylvania and the electronic property in the van appears to have been fraudulently obtained.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.  They have not yet been identified.

FDLE is investigating the use of force by the police officers.

The investigation is ongoing.
