Dump Truck Explosion Sends Garbage Man to Hospital

Orange County deputies responded to Abbeyville Road around 9:30 am on Monday following an explosion from a garbage truck which injured a garbage man, an employee of Veolia Environmental Services.

Wanel Meus, 26, was knocked to the ground and injured in a garbage truck explosion at 1207 Abbeyville Road, after emptying contents of a trash can into the rear of the garbage collection truck.

Meus was treated on the scene by Orange County Fire Rescue and then transported to ORMC for cuts and abrasions to his upper body.  His injuries are non-life threatening.   A male co-worker, the truck driver was not injured in the blast.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Team (bomb unit) who responded to the blast scene believes that the explosion was caused by the careless and inappropriate disposal of a pressurized oxygen container.

Deputies evacuated homes within a 300-foot radius of where the explosion was located.

Investigators are continuing with the investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
