Timber Creek High School students, Alexis Soto and Julie Silvers, have been awarded the title of best appellate high school attorneys in the State of Florida after competing in the 2012 Florida Moot Court Competition.
The Florida Moot Court Competition, hosted by the Florida Law Related Education Association (FLREA), is a five- month process where students write legal briefs based on a court case, including case law research. Once the briefs are submitted, the best briefs are chosen for oral arguments in the district where they reside, and in front of actual appellate judges. The best petitioner and respondent attorneys are then selected to advance to the state competition.
State-level oral arguments were held Thursday, May 10, 2012 in the 1st District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee by 10 teams of two students representing all five appellate districts in the state. From there the best petitioners and the best respondents were selected to give oral arguments in the final round. The final round took place in the Florida Supreme Court in front of five State Supreme Court justices: Chief Justice Canaday and Justices Quince, Pariente, Polston, and Perry.
The moot court teams from Timber Creek were assisted by local appellate attorney Tom Poulton from Debevoise & Poulton PA, in Winter Park.
