Thunderstorms Sweeping Across Central Florida

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Central Florida, including Orange County.

At 9:11 am, the National Weather Service in Melbourne said that, in addition to Orange County, northwestern Brevard, Southeastern Lake, Osceola, Seminole and Southern Volusia Counties would be affected by severe thunderstorms, at least until 10:15 am on Tuesday.

At 9:08 am, a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hours were detected.  These storms were located along a line extending from Orange City to Winter Park to 25 miles southwest of Poinciana Place and moving east at 45 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

Other locations in the warning include, but are not limited to Sanford, Orlando, Goldenrod, Winter Springs, Pine Park, Lake Jessup, Campbell, Kissimmee, Union Park, Osteen, Orlando International Airport, Oviedo, Poinciana, Geneva, Bithlo, Saint Cloud, Narcoossee, Maytown, Christmas, Scottmoor, Oak Hill, Harmony, Eldora, Apollo Beach, Mims, Lake Kissimmee, Titusville, Holopaw, Haulover Canal, Titusville Airport, Lone Cabbage Fish Camp, Canaveral Groves, Port Saint John, Klondike Beach, Sharpes, Cocoa, Rockledge, Merritt Island, Viera, Suntree, Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach.

Damaging winds in excess of 58 miles an hours and or large destructive hail could be produced from the severe thunderstorms, the Weather Service said.  Frequent to excessive lighting and very rain will also be possible.

Central Florida residents are advised to seek shelter in an enclosed building on the lowest floor if the storm approaches.  Keep away from windows.

The National Weather Service meteorologists also detected some weak rotation within this storm.  While not immediately likely, a tornado may still develop.
