The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center, in partnership with the Wells’Built Museum of African-American History and Culture, has announced an October 24th public program on the history of civil rights in Central Florida, with a special focus on Orange County Public School desegregation.
Featured speaker will be Rep. Geraldine Thompson, founder of the Wells’Built and a member of Florida’s House of Representatives. She is the author of Black America: Orlando, a retrospective of our community’s movement from the enforcement of legal segregation, through the struggles to remove barriers, to the activism to end discrimination that remains today.
The event, open to the public free of charge, will be at the Holocaust Center, 851 N Maitland Ave in Maitland. The presentation will begin at 7 PM, and the doors will be open one hour beforehand so visitors can view the exhibit, The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany, which is on display at the Center through the end of December.
