Poor shooting dooms Lady Cats in 67-40 road bashing
Once again, it was ladies first with regards to setting the tone – Norfolk State downed the Lady Wildcats 67-40 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game in Echols Hall.
The Lady Wildcats (12-14 overall,7-7 MEAC) missed their first eight shots and were down 15-1 before Chastity Rene Taylor hit a jumper with 12:38 remaining in the first half.
Well I should say not, try 23.8 percent shooting (15-63) of its attempts is simply not going to get it done.
Taylor, led B-CU with 19 points and Shakeyia Colyer (11 points, six rebounds) helped the Lady Wildcats get as close as 35-27 with 16:43 left to play.
Aivah Parham scored 21 points to lead four Lady Spartans (6-19,4-10) in double figures as they shot 61.2 percent (30-49) from the field and forced 22 B-CU turnovers. By the way, B-CU faces MEAC leader Hampton Monday evening.
Déjà vu strikes again as Cats fall to Spartans 62-61
It was a replay of Last season’s MEAC Finals showdown between The Wildcats and the defenders of Sparta, in this case, the Norfolk State University Spartans of Norfolk, VA.
Bethune-Cookman had the final shot against Norfolk State, but the Spartans escaped as the Wildcats fell 62-61 Saturday.
It was déjà vu for B-CU.
Norfolk State won the MEAC tournament game last March with a 73-70 decision in which the Wildcats missed its last opportunity.
Paul Scotland scored 16 points for the Wildcats, who overcame early foul trouble and a 10-point first half deficit to hold the lead five times in a tightly-contested second half.
Kevin Dukes scored 12 points, while Adrien Coleman matched the output with another dozen plus eight boards). Alex Smith contributed eight points and Javoris Bryant seven. Each had nine boards in the loss.
For the Spartans, Pendarvis Williams scored 14 points, to help the Spartans (19-10, 14-0) remain unbeaten in league play while snapping a three-game Wildcat (12-17, 7-7) winning streak. The Cagers are sitting on .500 but would like to be above it going into the tourney. B-CU’s road trip continues Monday night at Hampton. Beware the Pirate’s lair.
