The Visionary Leadership of Mayor Buddy Dyer

On March 10, 2011, Mayor Dyer delivered his State of the City address to many of his colleagues, business leaders, residents, and community leaders at City Hall. Mayor Dyer delivered a speech that inspired and motivated anyone who had the opportunity to listen to him articulate his achievements and what he believes.

Orlando is experiencing a business and educational renaissance in the city in the middle of a recession. During the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the city of Orlando invested more than $480,000 in 28 businesses. In three years, the Orlando “Main Street” program has opened 96 new businesses, which seven were expanded that created 588 jobs.

“Because of the hard work of so many people, the state of our city remains strong. No city in America is better positioned to come out of the recession faster and stronger. No city in America is better prepared to own the new century,” declared Mayor Dyer.

Mayor Dyer has a fact list to prove that the city is growing, and there is a shared vision in the community. The Amway Center was finished last year, and this state of art facility is one of the best in the world. The city this year will be breaking ground on the construction on the Dr Philips Performing Center, and on the east side of the city, the “Medical City” is being built.

There are plans for the SunRail, and the Creative Village, which will bring a hundred thousand jobs to Orlando. The mayor believes that the biggest force to his success is his ability to form sustainable partnerships which build consensus. Once he has built consensus, the partnerships will be the driving force for collaborations. Collaborations have helped the mayor get the job done and eliminate political battles.

The mayor also has used three words to help him meet his challenges head on, each and every day. The three simple words are, “Together We Will.” These three words help to keep the mayor grounded and work diligently for all the residents of the city.

At the end of the speech, the mayor answered questions where he connected with the different people who attended the event. If you did not get an opportunity to watch Mayor Dyer’s State of the City Address, go to the City’s website at www.cityoforlando.net.
