The race to succeed Gov. Crist begins

Governor Charlie Crist’s announcement that he will not seek re-election, but instead run for U.S. Senate, has seen several potential aspirants for his post come forward.   Some thee members of the Florida cabinet will most likely declare their interest very shortly.

The list includes, Charles Bronson, Agriculture Commissioner who has already said that he got more votes that Crist the last time they both contested.

According to Bronson, “Governor Crist took 2.5 million votes in the last election, spending $22 million. I took 2.6 million votes spending $2.2 million. So I know I have support out there. ”

While Bronson has not said officially that he would be a candidate, political watchers have said that he is almost certain to run against Attorney General Bill McCollum in the GOP primary.  McCollum is expected to make his announcement shortly.

Meanwhile on the democratic side, Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink is expected to be the favorite when she officially declares her candidature most likely later this week.

Florida democratics, who have not been in power since 1998, have a unique opportunity to regain control in Tallahasse, given Charlie Crist’s decision to run for the U.S. Senate.   In 2010, that state will be electing a new governor and three new cabinet members.
