The Best of Orlando: Orlando Public Library

jean gordon 1.jpgLike fine wine, the city of Orlando gets better and better.  Buried beneath its new skyline and nestled amongst its yuppie restaurants, the Orlando Public Library offers some real treasures that are bound to convince even the most urbane that this city is maturing quite nicely.

If a city is to be judged by its library system, Orlando would rank among the greatest because of its layout, staffing, design and amenities.  The Orlando Public Library is  truly a gem.

The $22 million approved by voters in 1980 was money well spent.  With just under 300,000 square feet there is something for everyone.  With its dazzling assortment and well thought out arrangement, this library would be appreciated by even the most jaded New Yorker.  Multi-media, eateries, a genuine gift shop and the most delightful staffing.

Professional, courteous, helpful and downright reassuring, the staff at the Orlando Public Library should offer classes in customer service to the less evolved amongst our institutions and business establishments.

On a recent visit, I went into the Library Bookstore and was greeted by Jean Gordon, volunteer extraordinaire.  Her gracious, smiling face has served Orlando for over nine years.  Her stories and recollections of her time there were endearing and compelling.

This bookstore is not to be dismissed. With merchandise as inexpensive as .15 cents, its a  must for holiday shoppers.

So, the next time you’re downtown, do yourself a favor and stop by the Orlando Public Library on Central Avenue at the corner of Magnolia.  And say hello to Jean.
