Teens Hurt in Crash, 15-year-old in Critical Condition

A teen girl remains in critical condition at the Arnold Palmer hospital, while another suffered serious injuries after the two were struck last Saturday night on State Road 46, in Seminole County.

Troopers said, 15-year-old Xiomara Munoz, of Winter Springs and 14-year-old Thalia Cruz walked into the direct path of a Ford vehicle.  Its driver, Edward Coffie II, 26, of Sorrento, was heading westbound on State Road 46, around 9:30 p.m.

Troopers also said, the girls were standing on the south side of State Road 46 waiting to cross the road, when the light turned red for eastbound traffic, but remained green for the westbound lanes.

The front of the Ford struck Munoz and Cruz, who were at fault, FHP said.

Munoz was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Cruz, who sustained serious injuries, was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital.

Coffie was ticketed for an expired tag and unknowingly driving on a suspended license.

  1. How do you UNKNOWINGLY drive with a suspended license? Obviously he knew it was suspended if he had an expired tag. He couldn’t renew his tag because his license was KNOWINGLY suspended. where is justice for these two little girls who are suffering in a hospital bed and one of which might not make it? Only Florida…ridiculous!!!

  2. The school in which she attends is praying and we have been all day today . Very sad situation . Xiomara is missed at school where she’s always seen smiling ..

  3. I’m a student there .. Xiomara is our world. The driver should be in jail right now. He deserves to be behind bars. The fact that he was driving with a suspended license he should be in jail

  4. I totally agree with you Anonymous! Unfortuantely it’s not only Florida. But, yeah, expired tag and suspended license (oh, unknowingly ’cause he sez so?). Kill somebody and get a traffic ticket. Is that like stand your ground and shoot to kill?

  5. How do you just get a ticket for hitting a pedestrian while operating a vehicle on a suspended license?! Fault or not, he should have not been driving, plus it wasnt like the were running into the road.

  6. I pray for both of you ,Xiomara and Thalia, every night… I go to the same school as you and it’s heartbreaking such a horrible thing has happened… So many people at our school, including me, are supporting you every second… Keep fighting and stay strong… God will be watching over you… <3

  7. Prayer go out to both families and for the complete recovery of both girls. This is so heartbreaking. My kids are friends with these girls. Everyone is devastated by what happened but try to remember what Xiomara says… God will never put you through more than you can handle. Keep fighting Xiomara we are all fighting with you!

  8. sorry guys but the driver wasnt at fault. If he was drinking, doing drugs, or speeding then things would be different. Accidents happen and this was one. You cant blame them for stepping out in traffic so dont blame this guy. btw you can have a suspended license without knowing. Hate gets people nowhere. Use your energy in a more positive manner. Prayers for the girls and her family.

  9. i disagree with you just a mom…if this was your child who had got hit by this person or someone else, you would want justice for your child. If he didnt have expired tags and a suspended license then i can understand. He had to know his car and license was not good. Therefore, he should be at fault due to he should have not been driving his vechical in the first place. As well as the truck was totaled, so he had to be going faster then what they say. Now if this girl happends to die, then he should be charged for murder. It’s ashame that in Florida people are hurting and killing these children and get a slap on the wrist for it. I believe if you break the law you are accountable for your actions. i’m not trying to lash out on you,so please don’t take this personally. I just feel like justice should be served and this needs to be look at very carefully…my prayers go out to her and her family and to all who have lost a child and wants justice to be served. Thank you.

  10. We have been praying at school for this beautiful girl<3 Stay strong Xiomara and Thalia<3 We love you both.

  11. One of the girls passed away…so so sad. To just a mom on here….I hope that you dont have children. I cant imagine what you are telling them. Its ok to hit and kill someone, just dont admit that you know your not suppose to be driving that way you wont get in trouble. I dont know if that is how you meant your post to read…but that is how it comes across. Did you know the driver wants to sue the girls family for the damage to his car??? SERIOUSLY!!! Now you tell me how THAT is ok? Nothing that has been said in mine of the other posts is hate towards the driver….its a demand, a demand for justice!

  12. I guess I would want to know how long has his drivers license been suspended. I agree if a mistep causes an unfortunate death, then it is truly an accident. However, was it suspended for an pending “DUI” charge or an unpaid parking ticket? Me being a parent, I would do a full investigation as to why his license was suspended and how long has he been driving with a expired tag? I am sure the dept of motor vehicles sends notices to those who are having licences revoked, suspended, cancelled, denied, etc.

  13. I a student at WSHS and our school is devistated about what happened and we r currently collecting donations to help support her family. Please everyone keep her in your prayers! Thanks you!

  14. It does not matter what they were suspended for he should have not been driving point blank. Now he has the nerve to want to sue the families, one of them families lost a child and the other one is God willing will pull throw…….that takes nerve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My prayers go out to both families, and friends. I pray and wish you all the strength in the world!

  15. I never knew the girls, but did attn & grad from wintersprings back in 2008 and heard about this the otherday so sad & may xiomara rest in peace, shes in the best hands now GODS xoxo

  16. I agree with “just a mom” like it’s not the girls fault for walking out in front of the road, it’s not the mans fault. I’m sure he feels responsible for what happened but that doesn’t mean he should be in jail for something he had no control over.
Yes, his shouldn’t have been driving but the fact that they walked out in front of him has nothing to do with his expired tags or suspended license.
The death of this girl is a tragedy and my heart goes out to the family and close friends, but just because people are grieving doesn’t mean you can lash out at this man.

  17. WSHS Student…yes the girls walked out into the road, and we know they were in the wrong…did u ever think that if the guy who wasnt suppose to be driving hadnt been there this wouldnt have happened? So isnt it his fault for doing something illegal by driving with a suspended license?? And if the driver feels so bad why does he want to sue the family for damages to his car?! Thats ridiculous!!

  18. I just want to say im sorry for the family and there horribble horribble lost . I go to indian trails middle schoool. but lots of students are greiving cuz of this . our teachers and staff are helping alot by buying litterally all the purple duct tape and purple ribbon in the whole wal mart and everyone walks around with them on so thank you to them i dont actually know the girls but my hopes and prayers are with you and your family i know god has a plan but it might night be what you want but its for the best and i knnow hes gonna ake sure youll dodge the bullets and jump the hurddels and in up on top

  19. My prayers are with Xiomara’s family at this time, saddness for a child that will not marrie, will not give her parents grandchildren, she will not smile again, as i write this i cry for the lost. May God have this angel in heaven. I also heard that the driver did not have his lights on.

  20. The guy that had done that should be arrested and put in jail because he had taken a 15-year olds life aka Xiomara. She had passed away on 4/6/12. RIP Xiomara love forever and ever.

  21. xiomara was a special girl that’s no doubt we had a lot of differences but at the end of all the differences. she proved to be an amaizng person always smiled beautiful heart beautiful person prayers to her family and friends. and lets not blame anyone. god choose that day for her. everything happens for a reason. rip xiomara iveliz munoz

  22. i just know that my best friend Xiomara is in a better place now, i don’t like to see her go but god knows best

  23. Xiomara was a beautiful young girl. its sad that a stupid guy had to take her life. she was on her way to the sanford fair and then she was hit. everyone loved her and new it was a asame that all happened too her. i new her she used to come over to my house when we had partys and we would invite her over to hang out and i attened her candle lighting. R.I.P Xiomara..

  24. The man’s consiquences should have excelled just a ticket. That is a fact, but, he did get a ticket for an expired tag on the same day of the accident. How was he suppose to know that after getting that ticket, that his license was suspended?! And, cops are stupid sometimes so I think we can all understand why the cop wouldn’t tell him that his license was expired. Case closed 🙂

  25. Anyone that thinks that it doesn’t matter what happened, Xiomara was the sweetest person here at WSHS. Everyone that DID care, were smart enough to realize that “no matter what happens, that guy should have known better than to drive with a suspended license that was also expired.” Xiomara was the most amazing person that has ever stepped on this earth. She didn’t deserve this to happen to her. She is our ANGEL and we all know that she is one up in heaven with Jesus. She will never be forgotten, never hated, always loved. Miss you Mara! <3
