High school students in the auto technology programs at Lake Mary High School and St. Cloud High School will visit Universal Technical Institute to participate in a STEM programming day on February 7, as part of Junior Achievement of Central Florida’s “Job Shadow” event. From working on internal combustion engines … to running computer-controlled diagnostic tests … science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills are core skills for auto technicians.

For today’s auto technicians, a laptop computer is becoming just as important a repair tool as a set of socket wrenches – with a typical car having more than 20 microprocessors working together.

The auto industry has a serious shortage of master technicians and demand is high as many technicians are retiring. In addition, the nation’s demand for auto technicians is expected to have grown 17 percent from 2010 to 2020, adding 124,800 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Universal Technical Institute is located at 2022 W. Taft-Vineland Road in Orlando.
