Task Force Works to Tackle Drug Epidemic

Mayor Teresa Jacobs’ Prescription Drug Task Force will hold its second meeting today, Monday, August 8.

The 18-member board, chaired by former Orange County Mayor Richard T. Crotty and co-chaired by Dr. George Ralls, Orange County Health Services Director, will receive updates from two-subcommittees, (i) Enforcement and (ii) Healthcare & Pharmacy, following which there would be a roundtable discussion.

The meeting will receive an update on “Cash for Gold”, a presentation by Dana Crosby-Collier, Orange County Attorney’s Office.

Jacobs established the Task Force to help address the scourge of prescription drug abuse, through law enforcement, healthcare and pharmacies, prevention, education and public policy.

Beginning July 1, 2011, Florida introduced a law which aimed to take a more comprehensive approach to address the epidemic of prescription drug abuse and untimely deaths that result from such abuse in the state.  The approach includes the regulation of activities by physicians, pain management clinics, pharmacies and whole sale drug distributors.

Mayor Jacobs’ Prescription Drug Task Force will meet from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Board of County Commission Chambers, 201 S. Rosalind Avenue.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the meeting and time will be set aside for public comment.
