Talent Trade Up

Anticipating a company’s next move is not an easy task and is always open to error.  Listening to surveys isn’t always the right way to go but what is a person to do?  In this light, ExecuNet recently conducted a survey, measuring the confidence level of188 executive recruiters.  The information gathered was not surprising but worthy of note.

Danny Huffman

The Confidence Poll found that 49.5 percent expect companies will “trade up” with new hires for existing executive management roles over the next six months. What does this mean for you? On the surface, not much unless you happen to be employed… then it may mean a great deal. Trading up means in-house employees have a higher opportunity to be promoted from within. With this in mind, if you are looking to move up in your career, this may be a good year.

Continuing with the article, estimates state that only 21 percent of companies will avoid adding new executive jobs.  In other words, looks like more companies are going to be seeking qualified candidates as the year progresses.  On a note of a different kind, a projected 3.2 percent will eliminate top management jobs during the same period.  Looking at the overall picture, 3.2 percent is not much…

According to the article, there is a growing consensus companies are beginning to leverage the current economic environment to build bench strength and replace poor performers and that a growing number of them are considering options for growth rather than retrenchment. Now may be the right time to perform at your peak.  Which reminds me, check out yesterday’s article highlighting ways to get you noticed (in a good way).

How companies will leverage economic climate over the next six months is as follows:

* Trading Up with new hires for existing executive roles: 49.5%
* Not adding new executive jobs: 21.3%
* Adding new executive-level jobs: 19.7%
* Not filling open executive positions: 6.4%
* Eliminating executive positions: 3.2%

Sure, surveys are not always accurate but many can be used in a positive and personal way.  This article and survey sourced today is no exception… what do you think?

  1. Why Mr. Huffman! It’s me, Scarlet. We met at a cafe in Amsterdam. You certainly are prolific on WON! Tell me….what exactly would a woman like me (within my unique profession) need to do in order to be “promoted from within.” I’d love to hear your sage advice.
