The City of Winter Park opened its new train station, one of 12 SunRail station stops which will connect DeBary in Volusia County to Sand Lake Road in Orange County, in the first phase of Central Florida’s 61-mile commuter rail line. Located at 148 W. Morse Boulevard, the new station will also serve Amtrak passengers.

The City, along with Amtrak, the Federal Transit Administration and Florida Department of Transportation celebrated the grand opening on Monday.

The new train station features Craftsman-style architecture, with solid beams of rich cherry wood etched with delicate carvings. Shades of green, royal blue and brown swirl about a beautifully laid tile wall – reminiscent of the colors of a peacock. The station is the newest LEED-certified, city-owned facility.

At a cost of $1.2 billion, SunRail is scheduled to begin picking up paying passengers from May 1st.

Construction of Phase two, expected to begin in the Spring of 2014, will link Sand Lake Road in Orange County to Poinciana in Osceola County, and DeBary to DeLand in Volusia County. This 29-mile segment will feature five stations and is anticipated to be up and running by 2016.
