Sunbather Suffers Serious Injuries after being Run Over by Beach Patrol Vehicle

A 33-year-old woman from Witchita, Kansas, was run over by a beach patrol vehicle as she lay sunbathing on the beach in Volusia County, Florida Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Troopers said, Erin Michelle Joynt was lying on her stomach at the beach on South Atlantic Avenue, outside of the travel lanes.

A beach patrol vehicle, driven by lifeguard, 21-year-old Thomas Moderie of Daytona Beach, was attempting to make a U-turn, within the travel lanes, when the front right tire ran over Joynt.

A pedestrian had flagged down Moderie to warn there was some broken glass on the beach, just before he attempted to make the U-turn.

Joynt was taken to the Halifax Medical Center with serious injuries.

Troopers said that this accident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
