Dyer Celebrates 28th Annual National Night Out

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioners and Police Chief Paul Rooney will join with hundreds of families and residents to take part in the 28th Annual National Night Out.  National Night Out (NNO) is an annual crime awareness and prevention event sponsored by the Orlando Police Department (OPD).

To officially start National Night Out, Mayor Dyer will join with District 4 City Commissioner Patty Sheehan for a kick-off party in SODO on Monday, August 1.  The kick-off party is free, open to the public and will feature giveaways from SODO businesses and an opportunity to meet Orlando Police Department District Patrol officers.

National Night Out will continue on Tuesday, August 2, when Neighborhood Watch groups around the City will hold rallies within their neighborhoods to increase program awareness.  Mayor Dyer will join with District 6 residents and families at Poppy Park in Carver Shores to recognize the first place Neighborhood Watch block party.  This year represents the first time the Carver Shores Neighborhood Association is participating in National Night Out.  Their “Crime Stoppers Carnival” will feature clowns, face painting, a performance from the stomp out crime dance group and a shine against crime flashlight closing.

Last year, Orlando came in second place nationally for the number of neighborhood groups and residents participating in the event.  To date, more than 70 Orlando neighborhoods are already registered for National Night Out 2011.  For the first time this year, churches are participating with more than 10 already registered in Orlando.

National Night Out 2010 involved more than 37 million people in 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2011 is expected to be the largest ever.
