An African-American student won’t have to leave the Orlando school she has attended since third grade, because of her hair style.
12-year-old Vanessa VanDyke, who attends Faith Christian Academy on Curry Ford Road, was told by school officials that she must change her hair style or leave. The girl’s hair is natural and she wears it puffy.
VanDyke’s hair wasn’t a problem until she complained to school officials that she was being bullied by students. School officials initially took the view that she must cut or shape her hair or leave, according to news reports.
Vanessa said her natural hair style defines her, it’s unique and she likes it that way. Her mother agrees.
After an interview with WKMG-TV, which went viral, the school has backed off saying Vanessa won’t have to leave.
