South Florida Man Arrested for Possession of Short-Barreled Rifle

A South Florida man was recently arrested for possession of a short-barreled rifle.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication (S.A.F.E.) Task Force arrested 34-year-old Jonathan Kelvin Farrington, of Miami-Dade County, on one count of possession of a short barrel rifle. Possession of a short-barreled rifle in Florida without proper authorization is illegal, according to Florida Statute 790.221.

FDLE’s investigation began when the South Florida S.A.F.E. Task Force received information that firearms had been located and seized during a prior unrelated arrest of Farrington. Further investigation revealed that one of the firearms seized was classified as a short barrel rifle.

Farrington met with task force agents at the FDLE Miami Regional Operations Center and was subsequently arrested with the assistance of the Sweetwater Police Department.

He was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Detention Center.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case. The investigation remains active and ongoing, according to law enforcement.

The South Florida S.A.F.E. Task Force consists of agents and detectives with the FDLE, Doral Police Department, Florida International University Police Department, Hialeah Police Department, Medley Police Department, Miami Police Department and Sweetwater Police Department.
