Pimpin’ on Sundays

By: Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr.

Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr., in this poignant essay explores the myth of the black church and argues that there is no such thing.

According to Soaries, there are all kinds of black churches today, many functioning within the ‘holistic tradition of relevant, prophetic ministry.’  But there are many other black churches that reject their historical legacy and pursue paths that show disdain for their heritage, including failing to focus on uplifting black people, not only spiritually, but educationally and economically, as well.   Many pastors who are prominent in the media, function like pimps rather then prophets, Soaries says.

So, when someone says “the black church”, the question should be asked, “which black church are you talking about?”
