Publix: Small Plane Crash Investigation Underway

Scene from plane crash

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a small plane to crash into a Publix supermarket in North Deland on Monday evening.

The plane crashed into the Publix in the Northgate Shopping Center at 299 International Speedway Boulevard, around 7:30 p.m.

There were dozens of shoppers inside the supermarket at the time of the crash.

There are reports that five people were injured, with the pilot and co-pilot seriously hurt.

The plane, described as a single engine experimental aircraft, had just left the DeLand Municipal Airport when it seemed to lose power suddenly, just before slamming into the supermarket.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the State Fire Marshal’s Office will spend the day trying to determine what might have caused the crash.
