Sheriff Demings will return $1,435,169 in unused funds to the Orange County taxpayers tomorrow morning.
The majority of the returned funds, approximately one million dollars, came from extra funding Orange County Government allocated to the Sheriff’s Office last year when the cost of gasoline hovered around and was expected to remain at or above $4.00 a gallon. Fuel conservation measures implemented by the Sheriff’s Office and an unexpected drop in the cost of gasoline enabled the agency dramatically to reduce its fuel expenditures during the past fiscal year.
The other monies returned to the county came from unexpended funds from a $297,000 COPS grant and approximately $150,000 in miscellaneous line budget items from various agency departments.
