Seminole County officials are looking at extending SunRail to Orlando Sanford International Airport, even as Central Florida’s 61-mile commuter rail line is at least one year away from becoming operational, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The extension, if realized, would allow travelers to board SunRail from downtown Orlando, switch trains in Sanford and head to the airport.

However, several things which would need to be in place on the 11-mile track, currently being used by freight trains.  These include, purchase of the track from CSX and upgrade of a 4-mile portion between Sanford and the airport to handle passenger trains, the Sentinel also reported.
