Florida’s road builders are pleading with Gov. Rick Scott to veto the part of the budget that will cost them 7,000 jobs due to raids from trust funds that pay for new roads and highways.
When asked about cuts to transportation jobs on Friday, Scott promised he would look at it “very, very closely.”
He reiterated his pledge to examine the budget with an eye toward job creation.
“My job is to make sure this is the state people want to build their businesses,” Scott said. “Something like that I’ll clearly look at very closely.”
The budget sweeps $150 million from trust funds into general revenue and potentially reduces by $250 million the Department of Transportation’s construction work program, according to the Florida Transportation Builder’s Association.
Scott said he will begin his review of the budget on Friday afternoon.
