Governor Rick Scott has rejected a proposed deal which would have brought Amazon, a major Internet retailer to the state, and with it about 2,500 jobs.
If Amazon did set up warehouses in the state, it would have meant that Floridians would pay 6 percent sales taxes on Internet purchases made through the company.
A spokesperson from Scott’s office said that, after months of negotiations, agreement could not be reached, according to news reports.
There is speculation that Scott’s rejection of the deal stemmed from not wanting to allow Internet sales taxes to be raised just before he runs for re-election. Amazon had proposed that sales taxes not be collected until February 2014, when the warehouses would have become operational.
