Florida has had some form of a seat-beat law since 1986, and police can ticket drivers who aren’t wearing belts when they’re stopped for other violations. But an amendment passed last week in Tallahassee — and expected to be signed by Gov. Charlie Crist — will put more of a bite into the law and allow cops to stop motorists for not wearing seat belts.
Resulting tickets will cost $30, but added court costs and fees could bring the total to between $93 and $119, according to one legislative analysis.
“There’s no question that the most important safety feature in your automobile is the seat belt,” said Eric Bolton, a spokesman with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “It could mean the difference between life and death or a lifetime of horrific injury.”
