Reports: 110 Million People in America with Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), using 2008 data, found there are currently just over 110 million people with sexually transmitted diseases in total, in the United States.

Based on two-just released studies, the CDC noted that young people carry a disproportionate burden of sexually transmitted diseases.  Between the ages of 15 to 24 years, they make up about 20 percent of the 110 million people.

The cost of treating the STDs is significant at $16 billion each year, with curable sexually transmitted diseases costing $742 million.  Chlamydia is the most common and the most expensive, the studies show.

The CDC reported data on eight sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, herpes and HPV.

Abstaining from sex, using a condom and mutually monogamous relationships, are good prevention strategies for STDs, the CDC stated.
