Report: Florida to Add 1 Million Jobs by 2020

A state Workforce Estimating Conference forecast says Florida will regain the 800,000 jobs lost during the recession by 2020 and add 200,000 new ones on top of that.

By the year 2020, the unemployment rate is projected to be 6.5 percent, the report prepared last month by the Florida Workforce Estimating Conference said.

Projected employment in 2020 would be just above 9 million jobs, with gains in nearly all major industry sectors, though only some sectors are expected to get back to pre-recession levels. The biggest gain is expected to be construction, projected to grow by 4.2 percent annually between now and 2020, but that’s largely because the industry lost the most jobs during the recession.

Other industries expected to grow by more than 2 percent a year over the period include professional and business services and education and health care. The report also says five fields will account for 50 percent of new jobs: clerical, sales, food service, health care, and construction.
