Community leaders are hopeful the decision to rebuild Evans High School in Pine Hills is the beginning of a revitalization project for an area known as “Crime Hills.”
The decision to rebuild the school, which has not been finalized but is a foregone conclusion, has community leaders hopeful that the new facility will mark a new beginning for the crime-ridden area.
“Law enforcement has to be on board to help protect the safety of the students there. I think if we look at it more holistically, this is a great opportunity to improve the entire neighborhood,” Crotty said.
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said a stronger law enforcement will be present, including more uniformed and plain-clothes deputies patrolling the area.
The school, which is estimated to cost $75 million to construct, would likely be completed in 2012.
School officials tried to relocated the campus but were rebuffed by residents who opposed the proposal.
