On Monday, city commissioners approved an agreement which would allow Publix Supermarkets to construct a frozen food and produce distribution center in Orlando.
The new facility is expected to create 156 new jobs over a three-year period paying an average annual wage of $46,325, while retaining 125 existing jobs.
Publix plans to invest $188 million in construction and equipment and locate its new distribution facility in a designated Brownfield site.
As an incentive and under the Brownfield Redevelopment Bonus match, the city has agreed to provide $78,000 over a six-year-period and $390,000 over a five-year period as an added economic incentive.
The State of Florida, which will also provide a total of $390,000 including the financial support from the city, must qualify Publix as a participant in the Brownfield Redevelopment Bonus program in order for the one million square foot facility to be constructed.
Publix is the largest and fastest-growing employee owned supermarket chain in the United States.
