A flight instructor and a student were killed early Wednesday morning after deputies said their small plane, a Cirrus SR 20 small-single engine aircraft, crashed in Volusia County.
Eyewitness News has learned that the Civil Air Patrol reported that the plane, which was part of a training flight, was overdue and the last contact they had was at 2:00pm Tuesday.
A helicopter began searching the area for the small plane around 2:00am Wednesday and found it at 3:30am on Colony Road and SR- 415 in New Smyrna Beach.
Volusia County deputies said they brought in their crime scene investigators and were at a stand still because the plane was so deep into a wooded area.
At this point in time we’ve asked the Division of Forestry to come in with a tractor and a plow to cut a path back to the plane, so that investigators can get back there and conduct their investigation,” said Lieutenant Brodie Hughes of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the plane originated out of a flight training school at the Sanford International Airport and that there was never a distress call from the pilot. However, they did find a parachute near the plane, which indicated that the pilot and student knew they were in trouble.
The victims’ identities have not been released.
