An Indianapolis pastor has adopted a highly unusual method to encourage residents to vote in the upcoming November election.

Pastor Joy Thornton of Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church is displaying a graphic and disturbing image of an infamous lynching in the 1930s of two black men, in front of the church, according to thegrio.com. The sign has the word “Vote” displayed boldly in red atop the image of the lynching; below the photo, the sign reads “Is this a reason to vote?” The sign also depicts an image of slaves in chains with the words “Vote” and below – “Lest We Forget.”

Pastor Thornton is hoping that the graphic will encourage more blacks in the area to go to the polls in November.
