Orlando’s Iconic Fountain Dead, Donations Sought

Orlando’s historic fountain that has been the central feature of downtown Orlando is dead, after bad weather knocked out its lights and other mechanical parts last week.

The fountain, located at Lake Eola sustained severe damage last week, after it was struck by a bolt of lightening and it is not clear if and when the fountain will be repaired, owing to the cost.  While the City of Orlando has a $1 million insurance policy, there is a $500,000 deductible.

Given the city’s precarious financial situation, including the current budget deficit, it has set up a website requesting donations to help defray the cost of repairing the fountain.

The fountain was installed in 1912 at a cost of $10,000 dollars.  A replacement, originally dubbed the “Millennium Fountain,” was installed in 1957, costing some $350,000 dollars.

The actual name of the fountain is Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain.  The iconic water feature is the official symbol of Orlando-the City Beautiful.
