Orlando To Pursue More Major Sporting Events

The City of Orlando is teaming up with the Central Florida Sports Commission and business and community leaders to go after more major sporting events.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced on Wednesday night a new community initiative to help secure more major sports events in Central Florida. Joined by Central Florida Sports Commission President & CEO, Sam Stark, Mayor Dyer got commitments from business and community leaders who will play an important role in recruiting and supporting events that come to Orlando.

“We have the potential to host major sports events at our world-class Amway Center, the Florida Citrus Bowl and the convention center,” said Mayor Dyer.  “In order to compete with other markets, however, we need the support of our business community at many levels.  This is an exciting time for business leaders and business owners to get involved, enhance the quality of life in Orlando and positively impact the economy of our city and region.”

The Central Florida Sports Commission will lead this new community effort.  Some of the events the sports commission is evaluating are NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, NCAA Women’s Final Four, men’s and women’s conference basketball championships, Olympic championships and qualifying events and more.

“Sports tourism continues to be a solid investment for host cities.  The business is very competitive and we can compete at the highest levels if we have full support from our business community,” added Sam Stark, President & CEO of the Central Florida Sports Commission.

“With Central Florida Sports Commission’s enhanced effort and with the community support will be more effective in our pursuit of major sports events,” added Mayor Dyer.

Community leaders signed “Commitment Forms” to show that they, in fact, are “ready” to support the recruitment efforts.  If your business is “ready,” contact the Central Florida Sports Commission at 407-648-4900 or www.centralfloridasports.org.
