Orlando to host Workshop on Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic

WHAT: Experts in the field of pain medicine, addiction medicine, and law enforcement will gather in Orlando this week to provide a comprehensive one-day event to educate healthcare workers on the prescription drug abuse epidemic.

A report out last month from the Florida Medical Examiners Commission shows almost 3,000 Floridians died from prescription drug use in 2009.  A nearly 14-percent increase over 2008, and deaths from Oxycodone increased 26 percent.   Meanwhile, deaths from illegal substances like heroin and cocaine – declined about 20 percent in 2009.

Nationally, Florida has the highest rate of prescription drug abuse and is the major distribution center for Oxycodone. The interactive, highly effective course will include a review of Florida’s recently passed legislation that hopes to eradicate the current trends of “doctor shopping” and “pill mills”.  It will also offer healthcare providers an introduction to the proposed mandatory Board of Medicine Pain Clinic Regulations.

Topics Include:
Opioid Risk Management
Dealing with the Difficult Patient
Epidemiology of Prescription Drug Abuse
Opioid Pharmacology and Drug Interactions
Non-Opioid Pharmacologic Management of Pain
Law Enforcement Perspective of Prescription Drug Abuse

The Florida Society of Interventional Pain Physicians endorses this program.  LorSand CME, LLC designates this activity for 8 contact hours through Bayfront Medical Center.
