Orlando Remembered: Faces and Places Returns

The latest installation of the Orlando Remembered exhibit, Faces and Places, will return to the Orange County Regional History Center on Friday, May 29, 2009. The exhibit highlights personalities and establishments that left lasting marks on Orlando, answering questions like: Which mayor wore a “Super Mayor” suit to promote a golf tournament? What happened to “The Florida Store”? And what local team plays in “the jungle”? Faces and Places first opened September 29, 2008, and closed in February 2009 to make space for a limited-run exhibit.

New to the Faces and Places exhibit are artifacts from the life of beloved Central Florida dance instructor Edith Royal, including her ballet, jazz, and tap shoes, and a painting of the teacher “who set Central Florida dancing” by R.L. Anderson. Returning artifacts and stories feature movers and shakers such as Carl Langford, Delta Burke, and Joe Tinker; businesses like Merita Bread and Randall Knives; and sports teams like the Solar Bears and the Orlando Predators.

Faces and Places marks the first History Center exhibit to feature a local professional sports team. The Orlando Predators display highlights the arena football team’s 17 consecutive play-off appearances, two Arena Bowl titles, plus photos, memorabilia, and one-of-a-kind artifacts.

Orlando Remembered is an annually changing exhibit, sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, bringing the region’s past to life through artifacts from the Historical Society of Central Florida collections.
