Orange County Supervisor of Elections Karen Castor Dentel made a major error and sent a sample ballot mailer with an incorrect candidate listing to 88,972 voters in House District 40.
The mailing was sent this month and listed the wrong Democratic candidate for House District 40. The correct Democratic candidate is RaShon Young.
Orange County Supervisor of Elections Karen Castor Dentel’s office said the informational sample ballot mailer artwork is created in-house by elections office staff. In preparing the artwork, staff mistakenly listed the wrong Democratic candidate and sent that incorrect file to the printing vendor. The error originated in the elections office, not with the printer.
Despite claiming all mailings go through a detailed proofing process, the Orange County SOE said “unfortunately, the error was not caught during this process.” Karen Castor Dentel said steps are being taken to strengthen the proofing system to prevent future errors.
Florida Rising, a people-powered organization made up of members advancing economic and racial justice statewide, took action to correct the mistake with voters ahead of the September 2nd special election. The group said the error made by Orange County Supervisor of Election Karen Castor Dentel “could lead to confusion amongst voters.”
The group wanted to make sure voters knew that the Democratic nominee running for House District 40 is Rashon Young. Early voting begins on August 23rd and ends on August 31st, and election day is September 2nd. Florida Rising also noted the deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot for this election is August 21st.
88,972 voters in House District 40 received the incorrect mailing in this major error by the new Orange County Supervisor of Elections.
