Girl Scout Citizenship

Learn what makes your community and culture unique as you explore the history of girls and their involvement in their communities around the world. Brownies with focus on celebrating the community, Juniors will focus on going inside the government, and Cadettes will focus on finding common ground. Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes. Brownies 9-11 a.m.; Juniors 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.; Cadettes 2-4 p.m. $10 per Girl Scout, $6 per adult. One adult per 6 Girl Scouts Free. Call (407) 836-8580 to register.

Home School Day: Cultural Excursion

Join us for an excursion through Central Florida’s cultural diversity. Find out how Native Americans and people from other countries have influenced our melting pot community. Enjoy a day of cultural celebration with food, dance, and music!

Programs have two start times: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Families will rotate through four stations. Members: $6 students, $3 adults. Non-members: $10 students, $6 adults. Children under 4 are free.

Exhibit Explorers: Festivals and Fiestas

Discover the history behind Cinco de Mayo and make your own miniature piñata as you learn the steps to a Seminole Corn Dance Ceremony and move to the beat of your own music. Grades K-5. Florida’s Food Editors: Cooking in the 1950’s and 1960’s

Throughout the 1960s, the Florida women’s page editors were setting the standard across the country. They were regularly giving lectures to other women’s page editors and dominated the Penney-Missouri Awards- the top journalism prize for the sections. This time period was described by Marjorie Paxson, Miami Herald and later St. Petersburg Times women’s page journalist, as the “golden era” for women’s pages. This talk will be about women’s page editors including Marie Anderson, Roberta Applegate, Beverley Morales, Edee Greene, Dorothy Jurney and Billie O’Day.

Kimberly Wilmot Voss, PHD, is an associate professor and area coordinator of Journalism at the University of Central Florida. Join Dr. Kimberly Voss as she takes you behind the scenes of the lives of women editors in the 60’s. 7 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. Call 407-836-7010 to register. Non-members $15, members free.

Retro Game Night

Adventures in History Summer Camp

June 9- August 15, 2014

Join us for a variety of Summer Camp programs weekly from June 9- August 15, 2014!

Grades K-8

Time: 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Cost: Members $125 per child, per week.

Non-members $150 per child, per week.

*Week of June 30th-July 3rd: Members $100 per child. Non-members $120 per child.

Member rate of $975.00 for all ten weeks of summer camp. Must be purchased in full at the time of registration.

The Orange County Regional History Center, housed in a restored historic five-story 1927 courthouse in downtown Orlando, showcases the vast collection of the Historical Society of Central Florida, Inc. The museum features four floors of permanent exhibits and also presents nationally important limited-run exhibitions. The museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

The History Center, located at 65 E. Central Blvd., is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $15, seniors (60+), students and military with I.D. $13, and children ages 5-12 $12. Historical Society Members and children ages 4 and under are free. Parking is available at the adjacent Orlando Public Library garage on Central Blvd. A self-guided Audio Tour of the museum’s permanent exhibits is available free of charge with admission into the museum.
