Orange County League of Women Voters Highlights National Disability Voter Registration Week

National Disability Voter Registration Week, July 13th-17th, is a great time to help empower our nation’s 35 million eligible voters with disabilities, according to the League of Women Voters of Orange County, Florida.

“We urge everyone to offer extra support to neighbors for whom voting may be more difficult because of disabilities,” said Gloria Pickar, LWVOC co-president. “Perhaps they may benefit from a ride to the polls, or help with online registering, or assistance requesting and posting their vote-by-mail ballots. With the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s even more important to use digital organizing techniques, such as electronic registration and voting by mail, to empower people with disabilities.”

Pickar also notes that it’s easier than ever to harness digital tools to help with voting right now. To register online or request a vote-by-mail ballot in Orange County, contact the Orange County Supervisor of Elections at (407) 836-8683 or online here. If you have questions about voting by mail, the LWVOC has more information in their “Voting Info” section, or refer to your county Office of the Supervisor of Elections for guidelines.

“In recent days, we’ve seen our nation rally to level the playing field for social justice, and we need to extend those concerns to persons with disabilities,” Pickar said. “Voting by mail may be a good option for any voter, but it can be especially useful for those with a disability that prevents them from traveling to the polls. There’s no better time than this week to sign up to vote by mail.”

August 8th is the deadline for requesting a vote-by-mail ballot for the August 18th primary in Orange County. Completed mail-in ballots can be returned by U.S. mail or deposited in secure ballot boxes at the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office or any early voting location. In Orange County the postage is pre-paid.

“The League works hard to make sure that every vote is counted and everyone’s voice is heard,” Pickar said. “We invite everyone—men as well as women—to join us in the Orange County League of Women Voters and help us register voters and increase voter turnout.”

The League of Women Voters of Orange County, Florida, is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
