OPD Officer-Involved Shooting Investigated in Orlando

The Orlando Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting at Luminary Green Park that occurred on August 22nd near West Amelia Street and Chatham Avenue.

At approximately 3:40am, officers responded to a disturbance between roommates. While talking with the roommates involved in the dispute, a white male in his 40s, who appeared to be sleeping in Luminary Green Park, charged at officers with an edged weapon, later identified as a pair of scissors.

According to local law enforcement, while charging at officers, the suspect made a slashing motion with the scissors. Officers gave multiple commands for the suspect to drop the weapon. However, the suspect refused to obey their commands and continued to come at the officers. When the suspect failed to comply, he was shot. He died at the scene.

OPD said this was a completely unprovoked attack, and the officers had no prior contact with the suspect. We want to be clear, the suspect involved in this shooting was not involved in the initial dispute between roommates.

According to OPD, the suspect has a criminal history including burglary with assault and battery, grand theft, and possession of meth.

The officers involved in this shooting were not injured and have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. As with all officer-involved shootings, FDLE will conduct an independent review of the incident, followed by the State Attorney’s office.
